Home Study Educators

Sharon asks…

What Books are Your Home Schooled Children Enjoying?

Just thought it’d be cool to share as home educators what books our children are enjoying, public and private schoolers may reply too as well as their parents. My 12yo ds learned the formula for PI from “Archimedes and the Door To Science” as well as numerous other types of math and he really desires to learn more geometry and algebra because of that book. Right now he is enjoying “The Mystery of the Periodic Table”, it has inspired to learn both within and outside the book the science of chemistry. He loved all the “Harry Potter” novels. My 8yo dd loves “Handbook of Nature Study” by Anna Comstock, “The Secret Garden”, and now she too is enjoying the “Harry Potter” series and she adores the classic “Secret of the Woods” by William Long. Both really like to read living books that bring life to history, biographies, sciences, etc….

What books have not only inspired your children but have also helped develop within your child(ren) a natural love for learning?

admin answers:

I don’t have any kids yet, but I was homeschooled myself. I read anything I could get my hands on. I loved Jane Austen, books set in the Civil War Era, American Girl series, the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, and many others.

James asks…

As a home educator do I have to teach Geography and History if my daughter wants to drop these in year 10?

My daughter has just started Year 8, but due to health reasons I will need to home educate her for a while until she begins her GCSE’s when she will hopefully be able to return to school. She loves most subjects but not Geography and History which she will probably not take as options to study when she has the choice.

admin answers:

History and Geography and their study are fundamental to a lot of other areas. For example in history she’ll read and write and learn to frame an argument and to balance evidence from competing and maybe opposing standpoints. Geography as a school subject relates to areas like science and business and is fundamental to understanding the world.

Mandy asks…

Why do many Asians come to study in Australia?

Because the certificates from australian educational institutions are globally accepted and the standard of teachings is very high compared to most of Asian nations. Also, when the graduates go back to their home countries, they most of the time get a very high-position and well-paid jobs. It’s not only about economic reasons, but also social aspect. Most of urban Asian city people view educators from Australia, European nations and America as jogj status in their society. It’s mostly socially constructed by the people in the communities rather than the students wanting to gain high standard of education.

admin answers:

Aha,I like the Spicy Dude’s answer.I am a Chinese,it’s much easier to get the visa of Australia’s.And it’s one of the cheapest.we only need to take a test of IELTS.To enter a university of American,we must got high PDA in school.

Lisa asks…

What should I do regarding a teacher unfairly retaining my child?

My child has an individual education program (IEP) which has classroom modifications, which a amplified is documented to be used in the classroom. My child and other classmates reported to me that the amplier had not been used 3 quarters of the school year. The teacher has retained my child.

I had a meeting with the board, which said that teacher wasn’t wrong for not using the ampified system, after the teacher admitted to me and the principal that she wasn’t using the system.

My child scored a 5 on the state testing test (in which a 4 is required to pass to the next grade). School is not the only place that my child recieves a education, there’s home, sunday school and bible study, in which educator’s in those areas have no problem with my child behavior or academically.

What about the no child left behind act? Please help!!! My child’s educational value and self esteem is on the line here.

Thanks for your answers.

admin answers:

I would like to say that you should bring it up with the board, but as a teacher I think maybe it would be best to have your child retained. It may not have anything to do with your child’s behavior. Sometimes, the teacher just feels as if your child would not be able to handle the work load of the next level. Talk with the teacher and discuss his or her reasoning for this decision. Then, if you feel that the reasoning is ungrounded, take it up with the school board.

Charles asks…

what is the best online college to get a degree in business?

im currently a full time employee w/ a family and would like to go back to school to get a degree in business/ accounting or finance. Are there any good AFFORDABLE online business schools out there that some one could recommend?

admin answers:

Why is it that the links people provide in these posts (such as the links in the posts by some) always “recommend” one of the for-profit colleges and never mention the traditional non-profits. Do these people really believe that a BS in Bus from Strayer is “better” than one from UMass or UTexas? No, they don’t – they’re getting paid for the click through.

So, OwnPool is correct – if you have to go online then the best choice in respectability and cost will be your local state U. The most respectable will be the traditional colleges that also teach online – there are 1000′s. The least respectable (and often least useful) will be the for-profit colleges.

Online education isn’t new and mysterious anymore. Nearly every college teaches online these days. And, I do mean “every”. Many of those also offer the entire degree online. They do fed financial aid, easy online admission, flexible class schedules, etc… Just like the for-profits.

So first take a look at what’s offered in your state from your state U. Places like UMass, Florida, UTexas, CalState (CSU), and tons more are all offering degrees online these days and business is the most common subject. It’s just the normal way things are now and becoming more “normal” each semester that passes.

Http://www.umassonline.net/ U Mass (online)
http://www.distancelearning.ufl.edu/ U Florida (online)
http://www.uwplatt.edu/disted/ U Wisconsin (Platteville) (online)

there are examples like that in every state.

Add: Sorry PE, typo – OwnPool is correct, PE may answer later. ?

Richard asks…

Is there any good online Music Business Degree course?

i’ve been google it for quite a time and can’t find any online Music business degree program besides Full Sail university. i like Full Sail but way too expensive. So, i’m looking for a cheaper one. Any suggestion..

admin answers:

I don’t think it is a wise idea to go for a musical degree online, as music is a kind of subject that is best learn only in a certain environment and with a good teacher. Online is a great platform but not for courses like music. So you will better of learning in a class with a teacher.

Donald asks…

If you have a Bachelors degree in Business Admin. can you get an online degree in accounting?

If you have a Bachelors degree in Business Admin. (not an accounting emphasis) can you get an online degree in accounting? Is it better to go for a masters and then take the CPA exam?

admin answers:

As long as you have bachelors degree you can seat for the CPA exams. However to get the CPA license you have to have 9-10 accounting courses (24 semester units of accounting), business law, etc. For more info go to www.dca.ca.gov/cba/publications/handbook.pdf. If you are planning to get a master degree, you may as well apply the units from your master to CPA requirement for pathway 2. My suggestion is if you already have a degree, better go for master instead of another BS because it is more marketable.

Career Schools In Ct

Paul asks…

Which colleges should be my safety/target/reach schools?

I’m going to be a senior next year. I’m an Asian female (though that probably doesn’t help me). I have a 3.9 (unweighted) GPA on the normal 4.0 scale, and a 4.2 weighted GPA. I’m ranked in the top 5% of my grade at a suburban public high school (CT).

I’ve taken all honors and AP classes throughout my high school career. Up to this point, I’ve taken 3 AP classes, one during my sophomore year (AP World History, exam score: 4), two during my junior year. I’m taking 4-5 AP classes my senior year.

PSAT: 215 (out of 240)
(Math: 80; Critical Reading: 70; Writing: 65)
SAT: 2190
(Math: 790; Critical Reading: 710; Writing: 690)
ACT: 32
(Math: 34; English: 33; Reading 32; Science: 30)
SAT II’s:
Math II: 770 (I’ll probably retake it since I want an 800)
(I also took Chem and Bio-M, but I probably won’t send them into colleges since they’re low 600′s).

-I’ve been a Girl Scout for 10 years.
-I played piano for 6 years.
-I’m going to be captain of my high school varsity swim team next year (and I’ve been on the team throughout high school).
-I’m a certified lifeguard.
-I’m also a part of Amnesty International, Key Club, Math League, Spanish Honors Society, and National Honor Society.
-I’m the treasurer of my school’s National Honor Society.
-I’ve accumulated at least 200 hours of community service through my local library, Key Club, Girl Scouts, National Honor Society, and at the hospital.
-I interned at a pediatrician’s office this past spring through a regional medical internship program.

I want to be a doctor, so I’m interested in BS/MD dual degree programs, but I plan on applying normal decision to other schools since I know it’s difficult to get into those dual degree programs. I would like to stay on the East Coast, preferably in the New England or Mid-East area. My last prerequisite for a college is that itmust have a ‘real’ campus with grass.

admin answers:

Sounds like you’re a candidate for some very selective schools:

Johns Hopkins
Carnegie Mellon

I immersion into a medical culture is more important than prestige and the typical undergraduate experience consider a specialized Health Sciences School, (not much grass) such as:

Albany School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences
University of the Sciences, Philadelphia

There is a hartford school of performing arts which many people i know go to

Careers and Schools in the Science Field?

I want to major in some sort of science, like biology, zoology, animal behavior, environmental, etc. What are some schools (not Ivy League) in the New England area that would offer that? Also, what jobs could I get that don’t require me to live far away (i live in CT) to have?

admin answers:

Heyyyy girl!
Here’s some choices:

American International College
Springfield, Massachusetts
College Board code: 3002

Colby-Sawyer College
New London, New Hampshire
College Board code: 3281

Green Mountain College
Poultney, Vermont
College Board code: 3418

you can either search these on collegeboard.com, or just go onto “college matchmaker” on collegeboard.com and type in your criteria. I just put in “Four-year , New England , CT , ME , MA , NH , RI , VT , Animal Behavior/Ethology , Animal Training , Biological/Physical Sciences , Biology , Environmental Biology , Environmental Science , Marine science , Wildlife Biology , Wildlife/Wilderness Management , Zoology , Some 3.0 GPA or higher” and found 70 colleges including the 3 i gave you. There’s a lot in mass, but they’re also all over New England. =)

oh and for jobs near you, if you don’t mind going out of state, my cousin’s friend works with something in the biological field at Rhode Island Hospital. It’s called like Lifespan or something? Haha i don’t really know the details, but yeah. Also, in connecticut, you can look at this: http://animaledu.com/land/abi_land.htm?gclid=CN60zdzC4pgCFQ8gDQod5w18cQ which gives a bunch of careers in animal behavior and such and i THINK they’re all over the US but i may be incorrect. Anywho, i tried.

Hope i helpeddddddddddddddd girlie! =)
ahaha i don’t think i’ve ever called anyone girlie in my lifeee.

Home Study For Adoption

Carol asks…

What are the steps in an adoption home-study?

I’m trying to understand the home-study process. I am applying for dual-licensing (foster-to-adopt) for Michigan. My plan is to adopt a waiting child right away, then start excepting placements from foster care. Can anyone describe to me in DETAIL the step by step process of a home-study (also called an adoption assessment)?

Thanks in advance.

admin answers:

Each state has its own process. I adopted in Georgia and I had to meet with my case worker 3 ro 4 times, one of which was in my house so he could see things like where the child would stay etc. Everyone fears the home study and yes I cleaned things that have never been cleaned since but its not nearly as traumatic as it sounds. As long as you have a clean safe house, that’s all they’re really looking for.

The best advice I can give you for the actual homestudy is that your caseworker expects your house to look lived in, it doesn’t need to pass a white glove inspection. Too clean a house is going to raise questions about your ability to tolerate a child, that by their nature is going to leave dirty clothes strewn about, not put their dishes in the dishwasher, etc.

As for your plan to adopt and do foster care at the same time, I don’t know that its a good idea. At least in Georgia, you need to wait a minimum of six months before you can adopt again and the child now living with you would have a chance to express their feelings about your desire to foster other children. My son has been with me for over two years now, he is very adamant he is happy being an only child and I firmly believe another child in my home right now would make him feel that much more insecure about his relationship with me. That doesn’t seem to be untypical of adopted children.

George asks…

How much does an adoption home study usually run?

DH and I are getting ourselves set for adoption. How much does a homestudy usually run? What does it involve?

admin answers:

That depends what state you are in and if you want a homestudy done for a domestic or international adoption. Fees can vary from $500 to $2000 depending on these factors. Call a few social workers your lawyer can recommend and ask what they charge.
The homestudy is really just a report on your family. For us, it was just answering questions about our marriage, family, background and the adoption process. It’s really not that bad at all. Good luck!

Mary asks…

Can someone please give me a general overview of the home study for adoption?

Hello. My husband and I are starting the adoption process and have our first meeting on Friday. I am looking for some general information on what is included in the home study. What are they looking for when they come to the house? What questions are asked?

Thanks!!

admin answers:

While the home study process is always slightly different from area to area, the link below contains some pretty good info on how things are in one area which should be similar enough in yours to put your mind at ease.

Daniel asks…

What does a DSS Home Study for Adoption Process Entail?

I am considering Adopting a Child. This Child belongs to someone I am familiar with. I am wondering “Exactly” what does a Home Visit entail….

How long is the adoption process through DSS….

admin answers:

The inspection process entails cleanliness, sufficient space for the additional person/persons, and safety issues related to the age of the person being adopted. With small children they look for locks on cabinet doors, electrical sockets protected with plastic plugs and door latches that would prevent them from opening the door on their own. The length of the process is so variable that even a wild guess id not possible, if all parties are in agreement and there is not a history of abuse, drugs or alcohol then it should proceed rather quickly.~
